SCCM Awards

Asmund S. Laerdal Memorial Lecture Award
The Asmund S. Laerdal Memorial Lecture Award is presented each year to commemorate Asmund S. Laerdal, creator of the Resusci-Annie model used in CPR training procedures. The recipient is chosen from faculty of SCCM's Critical Care Congress for his or her extensive involvement in critical care research and publishing.  The awardee receives $5,000 plus a crystal. The American College of Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) Distinguished Investigator Award
Recognizes an established and active SCCM clinical investigator for meritorious and pioneering clinical research in critical care who has significantly contributed to the understanding of disease or treatment of patients. The awardee receives complimentary registration and reimbursement on air and hotel expenses to attend the SCCM Congress in an amount not to exceed $1500.00. Distinguished Service Award
Recognizes SCCM members who have made exceptional leadership contributions that have furthered the vision and mission of SCCM over a period of time. For additional information regarding this award, please contact Carol Prendergast at cprendergast@sccm.org.  

» Dr. Joseph and Rae Brown Award

The Dr. Joseph and Rae Brown Award recognizes an SCCM member who has significantly advanced multiprofessional quality care for critically ill and injured patients at the regional or local level.  The award is presented each year at the SCCM Convocation and the awardee receives $500.  The award was established to honor the Browns for their work in organizing and sustaining the Pennsylvania Society of Critical Care Medicine (PASCCM), which later became the Pennsylvania Chapter of SCCM.  Nominations should include a summary of the nominee's accomplishments in critical care at the local or regional level and must be submitted to the Pennsylvania Chapter's Executive Committee by September 1, 2006 in care of Carol Prendergast at cprendergast@sccm.org.

Family-Centered Care Award

Sponsored by SCCM, the Family-Centered Care Award recognizes innovation that improves the care provided to critically ill and injured patients and their families. The award is provided to one unit/program and offers free registration to SCCM's 36th Annual Congress for one team member of the unit/program and a commemorative plaque for the team. Up to two honorable mentions will also receive a plaque. Deadline for application is September 1, 2006. For additional information regarding this award, please contact Sarah Brown at sbrown@sccm.org

Grenvik Family Award for Ethics 
Honors an SCCM member who has promoted the ethical and humane delivery of critical care. The award was established in memory of Dr. Christer Grenvik, who died very early in his medical career. The awardee receives $1,000 and complimentary registration to attend SCCM's Congress.  Nominations must be submitted by September 1, 2006. Honorary Life Membership
Honors an SCCM member for his or her dedication, commitment, and outstanding contributions to the field of critical care and SCCM. For additional information regarding this award, please contact Carol Prendergast at cprendergast@sccm.org.
 

ICU Design Citation
Honors a critical care unit, which combines functional ICU design with the humanitarian delivery of critical care. The award is sponsored by SCCM, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses and the American Institute of Architects. Applications for this award must be submitted by August 15, 2006. Lifetime Achievement Award
Honors a SCCM member who has demonstrated meritorious contributions to the field of critical care through the advancement of medical science, medical education, or medical care. For additional information regarding this award, please contact Carol Prendergast at cprendergast@sccm.org.  

» Norma J. Shoemaker Award for Critical Care Nursing Excellence
This award, which honors Norma J. Shoemaker, RN, MN, FCCM, SCCM's first Executive Director, recognizes an SCCM nurse member who demonstrates excellence in critical care clinical practice, education, and/or administration. The awardee receives $1,000 plus registration and reimbursement on air and hotel expenses to attend the SCCM Annual  Critical Care Congress in an amount not to exceed $1,500.00.  Nominations must be submitted by September 1, 2006. Presidential Citation
Recognizes SCCM members who have made extraordinary contributions of time, energy, and resources to SCCM during the previous year. For additional information regarding this award, please contact Carol Prendergast at cprendergast@sccm.org.

Shubin-Weil master clinician/teacher:
Excellence in bedside teaching award

Recognizes an SCCM member who is a role model in both the teaching and ethical practice of critical care. The award recipient must have substantially furthered the expert and appropriate use of life-support interventions. The awardee receives $500 and a medallion.  Nominations must be submitted by April 1, 2006. ABSTRACT-BASED AWARDS

The following awards are based on acceptance of original scientific abstracts for the SCCM Congress. For additional information regarding these awards, please contact Diane Alberson at dalberson@sccm.org.

Annual Scientific Awards
Recognizes outstanding research submitted for presentation at the SCCM Congress. Four recipients will be selected and awarded complimentary Congress registrations. SCCM membership is not required for eligibility.

Educational Scholarships
Recognizes excellence in critical care research and provides travel funding for fellows to attend the SCCM Congress (pending industry funding). Qualifying abstracts must be accepted for presentation at the Congress. SCCM membership is not required for eligibility.

Research Citations
Top 5 Citations (announced on site) will receive Future Complimentary registration at the 36th Critical Care Congress in 2007. In order to qualify for award consideration, abstracts MUST be accepted for presentation at the 35th Critical Care Congress. Research Citations will be selected from the top 20 percent of accepted Congress abstracts. Finalists will be notified of their status and will participate in an on-site judging of their poster at the Congress and (5) winners will be announced during the Poster Hall Awards Ceremony.

Specialty Awards
Recognizes outstanding research in the fields of anesthesiology, clinical pharmacology and pharmacy, emergency medicine, healthcare industry, internal medicine, neuroscience, nursing, pediatrics, respiratory therapy and surgery with an award and complimentary registration. SCCM membership is not required for eligibility.

SCCM Member Nursing Scholarship
Two scholarships will be awarded to a presenting SCCM member nursing authors of accepted original scientific papers (abstracts), based on need. Award winners will be notified in October, after acceptance notifications and letter of need is received.

The In-Training Award
Applicants must submit a letter stating the dates of their fellowship/training and the name of the fellowship/training director. Applicant must be in a critical care training program or have ended training not more than one (1) year prior to the Congress.

The Young Investigator Award
Applicant must have completed a training program at least 18 months but not more than six (6) years prior to the Congress. Please submit a letter detailing your status from your Director.
